Christian Virtual School is excited to be offering a new course for eligible students: OLC4O. The Ontario curriculum recognizes the importance of reading and writing skills, and to ensure that students are well prepared in these areas for post-secondary. In order to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students must meet the literacy requirement.  Students typically write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy test in their Grade 10 year in order to satisfy the literacy requirement.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course was developed to provide students who have been unsuccessful on the test with support in achieving the required reading and writing skills. The first part of the course focuses on Reading Skills and provides students with the opportunity to learn about reading informational, graphic and narrative texts. The second part of the course is focused on Writing Skills and provides students with the ability to learn how to write an opinion essay, a summary and a news report. At the end of the course, students will have the chance to showcase their skills in a Literacy Portfolio that will include a Learning Journal and a Writing Collection.

Course Outline

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

Students will make connections between their faith and their literacy skills. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on the different types of texts in the Bible and the importance of demonstrating their Christian values in their writing. Students are encouraged to rely on Jesus’ teachings as they overcome challenges and to appreciate their God-given gifts and skills.
